November '09 - Terriers take award

terriers

The following piece appears on the Charton Athletic Website

A junior football side has become the latest club to achieve a Football Association qualification, and players from South London Terriers received their award on the Valley pitch on Saturday. Players from South London Terriers received their award on the Valley pitch.

The Terriers, who work closely with the Charlton Community Trust, are the first disability club in London to achieve the Kite Mark Chartered Standard to illustrate their success on and off the pitch. Managed by Sharon Brokenshire, they play in the Football Foundation-funded South London Special League. And players collected a plaque and certificate to recognise the honour prior to kick-off as Charlton took on Milton Keynes Dons last weekend.

county ladies

The 6-a-side County Ladies Championship

...was held this year at Long Lane Junior Football Club, Greenwich. 5 teams attended: Long Lane Terriers (South London Terriers), Chelsea Ladies, Oaklands College (Hertfordshire), Hounslow Hawks, Bexley+ ( a scratch team made up from students from Bexley College and extras from the above teams.

We played in a round-robin format, 10 minutes one way. The weather was kind to us and all the girls played well. After all matches were played the Terriers and the Hawks had equal points so we it all was dependant on a really nail-biting Penalty shoot-out Final, won by the Terriers.

What I felt about this competition was that there was so much friendship displayed by all the girls and the team managers. Even though the Hounslow Hawks were disappointed, as it was so close, they were really positive about the success of the day. They agreed hat we should meet on a more regular basis which is a great step forward for Special needs Women's Football.

We were delighted that Paul Elliott, the Patron of the South London Special League, came to present the trophies and Medals. Paul is a great ambassador for social inclusion.  We were delighted he was able to come to be with us on this day.

The Trophies were donated by the National Football Museum in Preston. A cup for the winners and a shield for the runners up.  Many thanks to Ashleigh Jordan-Diaper of Brooklands College, the team manager fro the Chelsea Ladies and for organising this excellent link.

Last year was the first year we played for the Cup.  Lets hope that over the years this competition carries on growing in numbers of teams.

The Long Lane Terriers train on Saturday afternoons at Long Lane Junior Football Club.  This is supported by Greenwich Community Games who provide an excellent female coach: Rhea McKennon. This win is a real success for Rhea. She is an experienced Level 2 coach who is sympathetic to the girls Special Needs. She has played for Charlton Ladies.  We are always looking for new young women (post 16) to join the group, just turn up on Saturday afternoons or contact Sharon on 075155 39825
